Talking books: 2022 so far….

So, we’re into the last quarter of the year already.

Yeah, I don’t know where the time has gone either.

Anyway, as we hurtle towards December, I thought it was worth a check in on where I’m up to with books this year.

I never really set myself a hard target of books to get through in a year, but considering this blog was built around the idea of #52books we can all assume my goal was to read one a week.

A doable target.

Or normally it is. I appear to be behind.

I may as well accept it now, I’m quite a way behind.

I doubt I’ll make them up but its fine, I’m still being realistic when it comes to targets.

This year I haven’t had a holiday that’s consisted of sitting around a pool for hours every day with nothing to do but read – something I am grateful for; I don’t do well on beach holidays.

Usually at some point during the summer, I start to think about clearing my TBR list. While I still haven’t completed my Kindle (a completely unobtainable goal) I have improved my read to unread ratio*.

In fact, the number of unread books on there is in double figures rather than over 100 for the first-time years!

I’m taking that as a win for the year…. providing I don’t splurge and download a shit tonne more in the next two and a half months.

Looking through the list of books I’ve read so far this year, there is an emerging pattern. The majority of them are all new books, a lot I’ve seen reviewed and recommended on here, have bought them, and then actually read straight away!

I know what you’re thinking “absolute wizardry”. I mean who knew you could buy a book and then read it immediately? It’s certainly not a practice I’m overly familiar with, at least I didn’t think I was until this year.

While that’s a positive reading habit….it does mean I still have dozens and dozens of books that have been sat on my Kindle for years and years and years.

I’d normally set out a list of those books and resolve to read before the end of the year. I knocked four off last year, but Testaments and A million little pieces remain stubbornly in place.

You see, there’s no point in me making in a list and trying to stick to it. I’m a mood reader, setting myself up to read a book that I’m not in the mood for will pretty much guarantee that I won’t enjoy it, I’ll plod on with it, it’ll turn into a slog, I won’t give it a fair go.

So, with three months to go, I’m not promising to beat the backlog, I’m not picking books to read before the end of the year, I’m not going to say I won’t buy anymore new books and I’m not going to restrict my reading.

I’ll just see where I am on all counts come the end of December…who knows maybe I will finally get around to a million little pieces!

*I have no idea what the ratio is on actual physical books…. let’s just say the results will not be as favourable.

The books I have managed to read so far in 2022, I hope you find some inspiration…

  1. What a great list of books! I’m also a mood reader and have fallen quite behind on my TBR list too. I’m hoping to get back into it soon. I also have Daisy Darker on my list and I like the sound of The Reading List!

  2. Interesting post and a great list! I create a TBR list based on the books I have received from Netgalley or Edelweiss and if I’m not approve I check them out of the library. I rarely have a book that’s more than a year old on my TBR because I just never get around to reading them. Read what brings you joy always.
